In Between August

August 08, 2023

Great love in small deeds.

August. The month of in between.

This is the time to enjoy the last bits of summer and getting back into the school days. Hope the joys of both have been fulfilling for you. Also, two of my favorite things - wellness and dogs are recognized in August. It's National Wellness Month and National Dog Month.

We recently discovered this amazing give-back artisan business. One of the products we are offering are these beautiful greeting cards. MK (the founder’s) original artwork was printed on beautifully hand crafted banana paper from Haiti.  Giving AngelAnother product we fell in love with are the Giving Angels, beautifully handmade, upcycled ceramic angels with gorgeous banana paper from Haiti and a sentiment card. Made by their amazing jewelry team in Haiti. They make an encouraging gift for anyone! We understand how it feels to want to buy things that are good for the people who made them, the planet, and you. 2nd Story Goods has been working on the ground with artisans in Gonaives, Haiti for 10 years, creating recycled, handcrafted goods for a livable wage. Last year their impact enabled over 108 children to stay in school, not because of hand-outs, but through the dignity of their parents’ work with 2nd Story Goods.

4 KEY DE-STRESSOR AREAS FOR COLLEGE CARE
(These actually apply to everyone not just college students)

1. Self-care. Try planning to wake up, eat, study and exercise around the same times every day to alleviate stress. This will help give a sense of control, lower stress levels and even improve focus. Get enough sleep. Pay attention to diet, as in the kinds of food that a person eats and drinks daily. Pizza and ice cream are obviously not going to keep you going in the long run. And speaking of run, or walk - that is the perfect way to take a break from studies and stressors. Get outdoors in green space and get some fresh air. When you feel stressed or overwhelmed, take a few minutes to practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga. These techniques can help reduce anxiety and promote a sense of calm.

2. Journal. Research suggests that when you are feeling stressed, rather than avoid the uncomfortable feeling, it is better for you to address it by writing about it. Studies show that individuals who write out the causes of their stress, thoughts, and emotions tend to do better academically. To do this activity effectively it is recommended that you write everything you are feeling with no hesitation or worry.

4. Connection. Connection has the power to relieve stress, and the power of connection can be found in many forms – from a genuine moment of human interaction at the grocery store to a moment of silence amidst the trees in a forest.  Social support is essential in managing stress. Connect with others who share your interests or who can provide emotional support. Join study groups, clubs, volunteer organizations, or online communities to meet new people and build a support system.

5. Time Management. One of the biggest sources of stress for college students is time management. You may have multiple assignments, exams, and deadlines to meet, which can lead to feeling overwhelmed. To manage your time effectively, create a schedule, prioritize tasks, and break down large projects into smaller tasks.  Research shows that students who manage their time are less likely to feel stressed. Time management can be especially difficult when living away from home for the first time, when studying from home, or when juggling many roles and responsibilities at the same time. Use a weekly planner, priorities chart, or semester-at-a-glance calendar.
