May Days

May Days

May is one of my favorite months. Everything is blooming. It's getting warmer and it feels like it's vacation time. I immediately think about what I am going to plant in my garden and what annuals I'd like to add to my perennials. After living in a high rise condo for 10 years and then moving to a house with a yard, it took me a while to figure out that perennials are key to less work each season and they grow more and more and it's so fun to watch. I do love to add some annuals though!  And don't forget it's Mom's Day on May 11.

"This was the perfect gift to send my mom. She absolutely loved it!!! Working with the crew at The Hug Box was easy and they were so kind. I will definitely be purchasing more hug boxes in my future." - Stephanie B.

6 Tips for planting a garden in May.

It is such a joy when you can go in your backyard or porch to grab a tomato or basil for a meal. To be sustainable in anyway is so fulfilling. And if you have too much of a vegetable it's fun to share.
1. Plant warm weather plants. Squash, tomatoes, beans, melons, peppers, lettuce, cucumbers and eggplant. Local store for vegetable plants:  Morgan's Market
2. Prepare the soil. Pick a sunny spot for 6-8 hours of direct sunlight, a well-draining location and mix in compost or other organic matter for fertility.
3. Water consistently. Especially in hot weather - keep soil moist. Mulch helps retain moisture and suppresses weeds.
4. Protect from pests and disease. Remove yellowing leaves promptly. Holes or missing leaves indicate a problem.
5. Practice companion planting. Pairing plants help deter pests and improve growth. Ex: Basil can improve tomato flavor. Marigold can deter nematoes.
6. Start small. This will help with overwhelm of taking care of the garden and keep you loving  planting a sustainable garden.
